Bishop Graves, our resident Bishop has called us all to pray for the Commission on the Way Forward. This week, I encourage you to follow Bishop Graves' call and pray each day for the future of the United Methodist Church. This group of people, made up of bishops, clergy, and laity from all over the world.
What to Pray For
It can be difficult to determine what to pray for when it comes to something as big as the Commission on the Way Forward or the future of the United Methodist Church, but there are two things that we can never go wrong praying for: (1) guidance from the Holy Spirit and (2) wisdom.
- Pray for every person apart of this Commission to be able to see past emotions and opinions so that he or she can discern the Spirit and where the Spirit is guiding. That can be such a difficult thing when discussing something that is personal and a passion of someones. Every person that sits on the Commission does so because it is important to him or her as well as the future of the United Methodist Church. Each comes to the table with the intention of helping the church go in the right direction, and most hope to change everyone else's minds.
- Pray that every person will seek God's wisdom in this time of turmoil. Instead of trying to prove his or her opinion is correct, pray that each listens to understand with ears of love, then seeks God's wisdom in how to respond to the person.
Prayers for this Week
Pray every day this week for the Commission on the Way Forward and the United Methodist Church. Here are some prayers you can use to get you started. (Adapted from 5 Prayers for Guidance - Receive God's Direction and Wisdom!)
God, thank you for your guidance. Please show your holy guidance to every man and woman who is part of the Commission on the Way Forward. Forgive them for the times that they get ahead of your plans, and help them know when to stop and listen for your direction. Your ways are perfect, Lord. Thank You for offering gentle grace. Amen.
Lord, I pray your Spirit would move in a mighty way through the Commission on a Way Forward. I know that any sin can grieve and diminish the voice of the Spirit, and I pray against the temptation to sin for every man and woman part of the Commission. Cause each of them to crave your presence more than they crave sin. Help them grow in their fruits and walk closer with you. I pray for your Spirit to guide them in their daily lives and their conversations. Let your will and promises always be a meditation of their hearts. Amen.
God, I’m here today with open hands and an open heart, ready to lay at your feet the future of the United Methodist Church. Help us be like Nehemiah, help us come to you for guidance, strength, provision, and protection. As we face tough choices and hard situations, help us remember our belovedness, help us remember that we are your children and your representatives to the world around us. Help us live today in a way that brings honor to your holy name. Amen.
Lord, today I lift up every person who has given up their time to serve our church on the Commission on a Way Forward. Protect them from the Evil One so that they may walk in your ways. Safeguard their families so they may not be distracted from the work they are doing for you. Guide them towards your will so that, we as a church, may be the church you desire us to be. Amen.
God, thank you for the people you have divinely placed on the Commission on a Way Forward. Give each member a heart of discernment to know when you are using someone to speak instruction into their hearts and circumstances, and give them the strength and courage to follow through with that advice, even when it’s hard. Fill them with peace in knowing that even if they take a wrong turn, your purpose will prevail. Amen.
