So many times in my life, I have thought about joining something, then talked myself out of it. I've given myself excuses, told myself not to rush into something, or even waited so long to make a decision that I forgot about the desire all together. I often make excuses about how often I over commit my time and then feel stressed out because of how little time I have left. I remind myself of the importance of serving my current commitments well and eventually move on to other things.
I say all of this in an exacteraned truth of how often we talk ourselves out of things that God wants us to do. I often spend time in prayer asking God to help me discern the right places for my time to be spent at. I want to be sure that the few hours I have in a day are used to honor God, his calling on my life, his calling for me on my family. And most importantly, I must discern how I can best nurture my own spiritual health so I can do all the things just listed.
The key to all of that is serving others though. If I focus on myself, they I will never realize how much I receive joy by serving others. I become a better person spiritually when I am think about others and serving them. When I've had a bad day, and I take the time to serve my family instead of focuses on myself, then my attitude and feelings change.
The same thing happens within the church. When we take the time to serve others, especially people we don't know, our spiritual lives are changed. We start to see people as God see them. We start to love them more.
I love the way Eugene Peterson puts Matthew 9:36:
When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke.
Think about ways that you can serve others and allow your heart to break for them.
57% of church attendees didn't volunteer in the church during the previous year, and 28% of them have never volunteered in the church. The question is, why? I believe it's because they feel like they aren't qualified or that they have nothing to offer the church.
Read 1 Peter 4:10.
- What gifts do you think you have?
- What kinds of things do you feel like God has allowed you to do well?
Take a moment to take the Spiritual Gifts Assessment at https://goo.gl/BvYChD. Your primary gift can change over time as God's purpose for your life shifts.
- What did you learn about yourself from the assessment?
- If you have taken the assessment before, did anything change?
- Did you feel challenged to do anything or learn more from the assessment?
Read Matthew 9:26-28.
- Jesus had compassion on the crowds. When was the last time you had compassion for someone you didn't know?
- Consider the image of the harvest of people ready to come to Christ is plentiful, but there not being enough workers for the task. How can you aid in the work?
- How can you join in Christ's prayer that God will send more workers?
- What holds you back the most from joining the work?
Prayer for the Week
Pray this week and ask God to increase your compassion for those around you. Pray for more workers to go into the fields and help be the examples people need to guide them towards Christ. Pray that God will help you relinquish anything that is holding you back from becoming one of those workers. Most importantly, pray that those far from God will take the first step in his direction, then one more step after that.
