Praying and Fasting is not about changing God's will to match our own, but about changing us to match God. One of the significant effects of fasting is that we come into alignment with God. He helps us with our doubts and fears in all areas of our life. Stovall Weems says,
The reason this happens is that we are surrounding everything in our lives to God, even our physical self. We are telling God that everything we have is his, down to the food and drink we put into our mouths.
When we first give our lives over to God, we usually don't understand what that means. As we go about our Christian lives, we start to have a better understanding of what God's forgiveness cost him and what it didn't cost us. But God wants us to respond to his free gift of grace by letting him sit in the driver's seat of our lives.
Many times, give God that power is too much for us. We might give it to him from time to time, but we take it back. When we fast, especially for extended periods, like 21 days, we are telling God that we want him to be in control.
Lee Orr shared in his testimony how he sees fasting as a way to share his faith in a more powerful way. Listen to his story from worship this morning.
