For something to grow, it needs to be inside something that stretches. Im reminded of how things in nature that grow, make accommodations for the growth.
For example, our own bodies are protected and held together by our skin, yet as we grow up, we get taller and larger. Our bones have to grow to support our entire body growth. If the skin that holds us together wasn't flexible, then we wouldn't be able to grow properly. Our skin regrows, stretches, and changes as or bodies change.
Another example is the bark on trees. Tree trunks get bigger as they age, making the tree strong as it gets tall. The bark on the tree protects it from the elements and animals. A pine tree, the most common here, has ridges in the bark, cracks you might say, that helps the tree expand and the bark to continue to grow as the tree expands out slowly.
A final example is a hermit crab. We see these so much as we go to the edge of the water here in Shalimar or at the beach. The crawl along the edge of the rocks in beautiful shells. Their shells protect their soft bodies from being harmed or eaten. However, they can't create those shells, they have to find them. As they grow, they must shed their shells and find larger ones to make their new homes.
God wants to give us purpose in our lives, a vision for us to follow. To do this, he must expand our faith. We must be able to expand and grow as he pushes us forward. If we stop our progress of growth, then we become stagnant and will eventually die. Even when we become adults, our own skin continues to change and regenerate. That's what God needs from us, change and regeneration.
