Francis Chan calls the Holy Spirit, the forgotten God. Our God is made up of three persons, Father, Son, and Spirit. Each person is equal in importance and power; each plays an important role in our lives. However, many of us in mainline protestantism today have forgotten the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives and we have neglected to walk in his power daily.
Jesus knew that he would need his father's spirit to give him power as he walked fully human and fully Divine. The reason is because Jesus had to face temptations just as we did, so he called upon the power of the Holy Spirit, just as we do today. I believe God planned for Jesus to gain his earthly power in this way to show us that we are capable of being able to do amazing things in our lives, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus promised us that we could be freed from the powers of sin over us through the power of his blood. The Holy Spirit dwells with us so that we can have the power to do more than just resist sin. Now, we can concur sin. We can help others concur sin, and we can defeat the effects on sin in our world.
Prayer and fasting help us "charge up" with our connect to God and his Spirit. It lets us sense the Spriti's guidance more and remind us the power that dwells within us.
Jesus retreated so he could pray and recharge. He was filled with the Holy Spirit at the time of his baptism and when he fasted and prayed for 40 days. He knew that he had to be ready for satan to try and corrupt him.
God will prepare us for whatever lies before us in our ives. We will have obstacles. But with God, we can go over them, through them, under them, or around them. He will be faithful and will never leave us. He dwells within us and goes everywhere we go.
