We see Jesus model for us a pattern of disconnecting from the world to be alone with God a pray. He often separated even from his disciples to be alone with God. He had people demanding things from him at all times. Those demands weren't bad, but he needed to recharge and refocus through prayer.
Our world pulls at us all the time. We have information being thrown at us from every direction. Facebook has been turned into one of the major new outlets as well as our way to keep up with friends. We have TV, our cell phones, music or the radio in the car, and the list goes on. Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by things giving us information. No wonder our minds and souls crave the need to get away and be with God.
We can be alone with God without having to go to a retreat center though. We can add things to our food fasts like shutting off technology, music, television, and embracing the silence. We can cut out distractions during the time of our fasts. Suzy Chapman talked about this in her testimony on Day 1.
